What's A-Parent

For The First Time, Mayim Bialik Publicly Opens Up About Co-Parenting And Raising Kids After Divorce

"Life is not a dress rehearsal."

What's A-Parent is a series highlighting those who get real about the hardships that come with raising kids. These often untold stories help show parents they are not alone in their struggle, and are doing an amazing job.

Raising kids is no easy task.

It is difficult in the best of circumstances, but doing it when you are divorced presents its own unique set of challenges.

Mayim Bialik understands this. She and her partner Michael Stone split up after nine years of marriage back in 2012. After almost four years of co-parenting her two boys, Bialik is publicly  opening up for the very first time about raising kids after divorce in a new vlog.

In the four minute video, the Big Bang Theory actress explains she previously did not discuss her own divorce to protect her children's, her ex's, and her own privacy. She's opening up now in the hopes that it will help others.

"I'd like to talk about it in a way that hopefully might help some of you who are going through something similar. Or it might educate people about what divorce can look like in some families."

Bialik then lists different points about what her family does to maintain a good relationship. The points include spending holidays together, going on group outings, not badmouthing her ex, and setting a good example for the kids.

It might sound easy, but Bialik makes it clear her life is not perfect.

"Is it always perfect and exactly what I want? Of course not. Do my kids sometimes complain that they rather have Passover at their dad's house than mine? Of course they do. But we all end up being together, and that is the most important thing."

If you're wondering why Bialik makes the effort even when things don't turn out the way she wants, she uses the perfect acting analogy to explain: "Life is not a dress rehearsal. My kids get one chance to be kids and this is their situation. I have to put them first because I'm their mom and he's their dad."

Bialik realizes that divorce will impact a family, but it doesn't have to be all negative.

"Divorce isn't the end of a family. It is the end of a nuclear family. It is the end of a family living in one house, but we still have responsibilities to each other's family and to our children as a family."

Balik is always great for candid and thoughtful insight. She has previously spoken out about body-shaming and her other vlogs have covered everything from religion to cats.

Her latest video provides an honest and real look at divorce, and is something other divorced parents will hopefully relate to.
