Pop Culture Intervention

Don't Want To Break The Bank At The Movies This Summer? Stream These 11 Titles Instead.

Netflix has your back.

At A Plus, we're addicted to pop culture, and Pop Culture Intervention brings that obsession to the soapbox. Through this series, we'll recommend what you should be watching, reading or listening to; explore how arts and entertainment affect us; and interpret the important messages contained within various works.

Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, and that means summer movie season is finally upon us. There are already quite a few blockbusters already in theaters and plenty more on the way in the coming months. You'll probably be tempted by a few titles, but if you're trying to save money this season, you might decide to avoid the cineplex (and its tempting concession stand) entirely.

If that's the case, staying in and streaming something might be the best bet to keep you entertained. No matter what new flick piques your interest, there's a similar title available on Netflix that might just scratch the itch for you. To help you decide what to queue up first, we've put together a few recommendations based on some of the summer's most talked-about movies.

You might just discover a new favorite — and you can pause for snacks as much as you want.

1. Instead of 'Solo: A Star Wars Story,' watch 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story'

Alden Ehrenreich plays a young Han Solo in the galaxy's latest action-packed adventure. If you're in the mood for a spin-off that fills in the gaps between previous movies, you can also go for this 2016 installment, which explores how the rebellion obtained the plans to the Death Star. Even if you've seen it already, it's never a bad time for Star Wars.

2. Instead of 'Avengers: Infinity War,' watch 'Captain America: Civil War'

The latest Marvel movie is a veritable who's who of your favorite characters. Civil War may not feature quite as many faces, but it's still a pretty big family reunion — albeit with more than a bit of infighting. If you decide to enjoy this one, you'd better hurry up, as it leaves Netflix June 25.

3. Instead of 'Book Club,' watch 'How to Make an American Quilt'

If the idea of some of Hollywood's most beloved women getting together to laugh and learn life lessons has you hooked, this is a '90s movie you might enjoy. It features legendary actresses Ellen Burstyn, Anne Bancroft, and Alfre Woodard, but instead of reading Fifty Shades of Grey, they make quilts.

4. Instead of 'Deadpool 2,' watch 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Vol. 2'

Are you looking for a blend of action and comedy in your superhero movie? Do you prefer it to be a sequel? Instead of watching Ryan Reynolds as the wise-cracking Deadpool, why not spend some time with this lovably weird team of heroes led by Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana?

5. Instead of 'Ocean's 8,' watch 'Mad Money'

The new heist comedy, out June 8, focuses on a group of women who set out to rob the Met Gala. If a team of female criminals sounds like your cup of tea, spend some time with Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah, and Katie Holmes as they plan a bank robbery.

6. Instead of 'Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,' watch 'Mamma Mia!'

If you haven't seen the 2008 movie-musical based on the ABBA-inspired Broadway show of the same name, here's the perfect way to decide if you really want to check out the sequel, out July 20. And if you have seen it, take it as an opportunity to sing along in the privacy of your own home.

7. Instead of 'The Incredibles 2,' watch 'Meet the Robinsons'

Pixar fans are excited to see what their favorite superhero family is up to when the sequel is released June 15. But there's another "incredible" family you may not have met named the Robinsons. This title, released in 2007, features a time travel plot and plenty of eccentric characters.

8. Instead of 'Hereditary,' watch 'The Sixth Sense'

If it's a scary movie starring Toni Collette that you're looking for, you don't have to head all the way to the movie theater to see her new horror film, out June 8. Just watch this classic M. Night Shyamalan title in which Collette plays the mother of a boy who can see dead people.

9. Instead of 'Mission Impossible: Fallout,' watch 'The Bourne Ultimatum'

Want to watch a secret agent movie with a big star? There's no need to leave the house to see Tom Cruise in the umpteenth installment of his Ethan Hunt series, out July 27. Just watch Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in the second sequel to The Bourne Identity.

10. Instead of 'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,' watch 'King Kong'

If it's giant animals you're looking for, you can skip the newest Jurassic Park movie, out June 22, and watch 2005's King Kong remake instead. Not only is there a huge gorilla, but there also happen to be quite a few dinosaurs on Skull Island.

11. Instead of 'RBG,' watch 'She's Beautiful When She's Angry'

We couldn't leave you without a documentary option. A biographical look at Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is now in select theaters, but if it's not playing near you, press play on this doc about the women's movement of the 1960s, and the empowering figures who made it happen.
