National Adoption Month

Heart Gallery NYC Uses Photography To Help Kids In Foster Care Find Their Forever Homes

There are over 25,000 foster children living in New York state.

November is National Adoption Month. In honor of the month, we will be bringing attention to the thousands of people in foster care awaiting forever homes, as well as those who provide and advocate for them. These stories emphasize the idea that families are bound together by the love they share, rather than their biological roots.

On any given day, there are nearly 428,000 children in foster care in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In New York, there are over 25,000 foster children waiting to find their forever homes. Children and teens enter the foster care system because they have been neglected, abused, or their parents or guardians are unable to care for them for one reason or another. Many of the kids in the foster care system bounce from one home to the next and some are even separated from their siblings. But what these children need are permanent, loving adoptive families.

The Heart Gallery NYC is an organization that aims to help them find just that. The nonprofit's volunteers and staff collaborate with the NYC Administration for Children's Services to create photography exhibits which feature moving portraits of children in foster care. These portraits aim to raise awareness about the needs of kids in the foster care system. They are taken by award-winning photographers and the exhibits travel throughout New York City's five boroughs.

In addition to helping to connect kids to adoptive parents, the Heart Gallery NYC provides services to children who are at risk of aging out of the foster care system without finding their forever family. The organization provides mentoring, internships, scholarships, and more to these kids.

Adopting a child in foster care means opening up your heart and home to someone in need. It's truly life-changing for both the child and their adoptive families.
