Kelly Clarkson And Pink's First Performance Together At The AMAs Carried Special Meaning

"As this year comes to a close, we look forward to 2018 with hope."

It was just a few weeks ago that Kelly Clarkson told Entertainment Weekly she wanted to work with Pink. "I think if you project it enough, it might happen, right?" she said at the time, and on Sunday night, her dream came true at the American Music Awards.

The two powerhouse singers, both of whom have new albums out (Meaning of Life for Clarkson and Beautiful Trauma for Pink), opened the show with a duet of R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts." It was their first time ever singing together, and they were both clearly excited about it.

Before the show, both Pink and Clarkson tweeted a black-and-white image of themselves rehearsing on stage together. Pink called the impending performance an "honor," saying Clarkson "has a direct line to outer space with that voice." Clarkson, meanwhile, joked that she planned to frame the picture.

The duet wasn't just meaningful to the two women, however. It was also a tribute to those affected by this year's most tragic disasters and attacks — and the heroes who emerged. Jamie Foxx introduced the performance, and was joined on stage by several first responders who made a difference this year. He encouraged the crowd to give them a standing ovation.

"This year, more than perhaps any other in recent history, we needed the power of music to help us escape the news of the day ... to help us heal," Foxx explained, later adding, "As this year comes to a close, we look forward to 2018 with hope. For, even as we mourn those who were lost, we know this: Together our strength will pull us through. Together we shall overcome the pain. Together we can unite as a people and as a nation."

Pink and Clarkson also performed individually at the show. Clarkson sang her classic song "Miss Independent," along with the newer track "Love So Soft." Pink, meanwhile, took her high-flying acrobatic act even higher, performing "Beautiful Trauma" while hanging off the side of a building.
