It's been almost 30 years since Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" became a hit on the Billboard charts, and now Khalid is bringing his own spin to this late '80s classic.

The singer recently performed a cover of "Fast Car" at BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge nearly four years after Sam Smith took on the song at the same place. And while it might seem like nothing has changed just a few seconds into his performance, it has. Rather than use the song's folk rock elements, Khalid only utilized the power of an acoustic guitar and vocals in order to make Chapman's words stand out a little bit more.

"Fast Car" has just as much relevance as it did when it was released in 1988. It's a song about a woman who can't seem to escape poverty no matter how much she tries, inspired by Chapman's upbringing and experiences along the way. And thanks to Khalid's cover, people listening to the song for the first time can identify with the song in new ways.
