John Mayer Dances With Pandas In WTF 'Still Feel Like Your Man' Music Video

Butterflies, kimonos, and fans — oh my!

John Mayer is back with a music video for his new hit song "Still Feel Like Your Man" that is equal parts vivid colors and WTF moments.

To be honest, we're not really sure what's going on with the storyline. Mayer basically finds himself at the center of an Asian-inspired location singing and dancing in front of a very upset-looking man with a butterfly-covered woman in the background. That's pretty much it — oh, and there's a lyric about keeping some former flame's shampoo just in case, too.

The onlookers in the Kill Bill-esque setting have oil paper umbrellas and folding fans. Two people even spar in a bamboo forest. But the real winner is the solo dancing from Mayer — reminiscent of Drake's awkward-yet-mesmerizing "Hotline Bling" moves. Things only get weirder when two people in full-body panda costumes join in before giving way to a diverse set of dancers.

In a recent chat with The New York Times, Mayer described the music video as taking place in a "disco dojo" and feeling like an "ancient Japanese R&B" jam. Neither of these things is real but yet, at the same time, are somehow right on point. He also confirmed that the song is about ex-girlfriend Katy Perry.

On top of all that, though, Mayer also knew that the internet might not have the warmest reception to this project — especially given all the controversy over whitewashing in Hollywood.

"Do I think that someone is going to tweet that this is cultural appropriation? Yes," he told the paper about potential backlash. "Part of cultural appropriation is blindness. I'm on the right side of the line because it's an idea for the video that has a very multiethnic casting, and nobody who is White or non-Asian is playing an Asian person … I think we were as sensitive as we could possibly be. We discussed it at every juncture."

Mayer, announcing the video, seemed to poke fun at his own dance floor skills, but somehow didn't provide us with the answer we're all clamoring for: why were there dancing pandas?

Mayer's upcoming album, The Search for Everything, is out April 14.
