Chris Martin Pays Tribute To Chester Bennington With A Moving Linkin Park Cover

He dedicated it to "anyone who's missing someone."

Coldplay kicked off their 2017 North American tour earlier this week in New Jersey. Toward the end of the set, frontman Chris Martin took a moment to pay tribute to another music icon who recently passed away — Chester Bennington of Linkin Park.

Bennington passed away from suicide last month at the age of 41. Following his death, Linkin Park set up a website with resources for suicide prevention and released a touching letter in Bennington's memory. "We're trying to remind ourselves that the demons who took you away from us were always part of the deal. After all, it was the way you sang about those demons that made everyone fall in love with you in the first place," the letter reads.

One of the band's most iconic songs, "Crawling," received a moving update from Chris Martin, who sang it solo at the piano. According to Billboard, Martin dedicated the performance to "anyone who's missing someone," and chose to restart in order to get it right. In his hands, the song transformed into a soft ballad, and the lyrics took on new meaning in light of Bennington's death.

"Crawling in my skin / These wounds, they will not heal," Martin sang. "Fear is how I fall / Confusing what is real."

As Billboard points out, Coldplay released their debut album Parachutes just five months before Linkin Park's own debut with Hybrid Theory in 2000. Linkin Park's new co-headlining tour with Blink-182 was canceled after Bennington's death.

Chris Martin is no stranger to tributes. After George Michael's death last year, he performed "Last Christmas" at a homeless shelter. Before that, he honored Prince with a little help from James Corden.
