It's here — on Wednesday, Avril Lavigne released her new song "Head Above Water," an emotional account of her battle with Lyme disease. It's been five years since Lavigne's last album, and we're happy to see her back to making music again.

"Yeah my life is what I'm fighting for / Can't part the sea / Can't reach the shore," Lavigne sings on the beautiful new track. "And my voice becomes the driving force / I won't let this pull me overboard."

Earlier this month, Lavigne announced the song in an open letter to fans detailing her health struggles and how writing her new music helped her through it. "I was able to turn that fight into music I'm really proud of," she wrote. "I wrote songs in my bed and on the couch and recorded there mostly as well. Words and lyrics that were so true to my experience came pouring out of me effortlessly."

In the song's chorus, she belts, "God, keep my head above water / Don't let me drown / It gets harder / I'll meet you there at the altar / As I fall down to my knees."

As Lavigne shared in her letter, she chose to be open about her experience in order to raise awareness of Lyme disease. She's doing that through her organization, The Avril Lavigne Foundation. To coincide with the release of "Head Above Water," the foundation is selling T-shirts featuring the song's cover art, to "help us provide individuals affected by Lyme with treatment they otherwise couldn't afford."

On her website, Lavigne shares that "Head Above Water" was the first song she sang after two years, explaining, "I thought my voice would be weak, it ended up being stronger than ever. The break happened to actually be good for my vocal cords."

The singer is working on her upcoming sixth album. "This album tells my story," she shares.
