This Thursday marked Avril Lavigne's 34th birthday, so it was fitting that she used this day to premiere the music video for her deeply personal new song "Head Above Water," which she wrote about her struggle with Lyme disease. According to People, it's her first new video in more than five years.

"It makes my heart so unbelievably full to premiere the #HeadAboveWater music video for you all today, on my birthday," Lavigne wrote on Twitter. "From the very first day I started writing this song, I have been inspired and gathering visuals and imagining what the music video could look like."

The video, which was filmed in Iceland and directed by Elliott Lester, turned out to be a stunning representation of the lyrics and meaning behind the song. The singer, dressed in a white gown, wanders cliffs above rolling waves. Eventually, she's submerged in the water, as she sings the chorus: "God, keep my head above water / Don't let me drown / It gets harder."

The video ends with a written message raising awareness about Lyme disease, encouraging fans to "join our fight against Lyme" by visiting the website for The Avril Lavigne Foundation, which features resources about prevention, treatment, and research.

Lavigne announced that she was releasing new music earlier this month in an emotional letter to her fans in which she detailed her experience with the disease, which she calls "the battle of my lifetime." She used that struggle as inspiration for songs like "Head Above Water."

"I have decided to be truthful about my struggle, open and more vulnerable than ever before," she shared. "And to be honest, part of me doesn't want to talk about being sick because I want it all to be behind me, but I know I have to. Because not only is it a part of my life, I need to bring awareness to the severity of Lyme Disease."
