#StarringConstanceWu Is The Much-Needed Female Counterpart To #StarringJohnCho

Cut the whitewashing.

While Hollywood's diversity problem has been well documented recently thanks to the #OscarsSoWhite debacle, the discussion often stays limited to white and black. That means Asians, Hispanics, Native Americans, and others are largely ignored, a reality which leads to incredibly offensive whitewashing and cultural appropriation in film.

With respect to Asians in particular, the outcry over casting decisions in AlohaGhost in the Shell, and 21 has inspired creative protests such as #StarringJohnCho, a Twitter account that Photoshops the Korean-American actor into popular movie posters of the past and present. It didn't take long for the movement to get its female counterpart, too: now #StarringConstanceWu exists, and it's just as powerful.

In similar fashion, the account drops Constance Wu of Fresh Off the Boat into blockbuster movie posters, and it's even led to some images featuring Cho and Wu together.

Check out a few examples:

For Wu's part, she seems to be onboard with the whole thing:

It's unclear what direct effect this may have on Hollywood's whitewashing problem, but these kinds of protests suggest those pissed off by it aren't going to quiet down until changes are made.
