This Disney Cartoon Just Made History With This Simple Animated Kiss

Equality meets kids programming.

Love wins — especially in Disney cartoons.

For the first time ever, Disney showed same-sex couples kissing in one of its animated shows, and the best part about it was that it wasn't a big deal at all.

From Star vs. the Forces of Evil episode "Just Friends."

When couples began smooching during a recent season 2 episode of Disney XD's Star vs. the Forces of Evil, the show included gay and lesbian partners in the most casual way. It wasn't the big draw of the "Just Friends" episode or even a main point in the plot. Instead, it was as ordinary as breathing — and if you blinked, you may have missed it.

The scene begins with the show's main character, Star, who attends a concert and feels sad when she appears to be the only one without a date to kiss during a romantic song. She ditches the concert, but the lovebirds — heterosexual and same-sex — bask in the bliss of the romantic tune.

The moral is that same-sex couples are just like any other couples, including the older and interracial pairs also shown, and shouldn't be treated any differently. Additionally, public displays of affection between gay and lesbian partners are just as lovely as between a man and a woman.

This also marks another major stride in the LGBTQ community being included in cartoons geared toward kids: last year, Nickelodeon's The Loud House featured a same-sex couple, who were the parents of the main character's best friend.

Bravo to Disney, which has also featured same-sex couples in shows such as Gravity Falls and Good Luck Charlie, but this was the sweetest, first animated same-sex kiss we could have hoped for.
