I Spoke With The Makeup Artist Who Emigrated From Ecuador At 16 To Find Success In America

Catch my interview with Amway makeup artist Alexandra Diaz-Izurieta.

Clairity is a series introducing readers to new fashion and beauty products from brands our host, Claire Peltier, believes in. These products not only help readers look and feel good, but have a positive impact on the world, the environment, and hopefully the user's self-image, too.

On a couch in New York City, I spoke with makeup artist Alexandra Diaz-Izurieta. Outside it is raining, but it's cozy inside the studio where Alexandra, dressed in bright yellow, shows me spring's latest beauty trends, and the products she uses to achieve the look.

Alexandra's journey to becoming a makeup artist is pretty amazing, and I listen intently as she tells me her story of leaving Ecuador at just 16 years old to move to the United States.

She tells me all about her beginnings in America, trying out a music career, and how she later attended John Jay College to become a corporate immigration paralegal.

In 2012, Alexandra added a new title to her resume when she started working with Amway's line of ARTISTRY cosmetics, and became a makeup artist for the company. Since then, she's had the opportunity to do such things as work backstage at New York Fashion Week, and work with bridal clients.

Alexandra tells me: "At some point, I did call my dad and I said, 'I don't think I'm gonna make it. I need to go back [home].' And he said, 'No, because you have to finish what you start.' "

Alexandra's journey to get to where she is today, and her immense passion, is truly inspiring. It makes me realize how important it is to create time for your dreams, and to never give up when things get tough. Because perhaps that is when you truly find your natural glow.
