A Plus Book Club

This Is What Happened When The A Plus Book Club Drank For Every Misogynistic Moment In 'The Scarlet Letter'

We're starting the year with something a little different and a lot feminist.

Did anyone escape high school without reading The Scarlet Letter? The classic tale of a woman labeled as an adulterer by the members of her Puritan Massachusetts town has been a mainstay of literature courses for decades. For this month's episode of the A Plus Book Club, Lindsay Geller and I are revisiting Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novel, but with a twist.

The rules are simple: we're going to read through chapter summaries of the Scarlet Letter and drink every time something misogynistic happens. A panel of men decide protagonist Hester Prynne's fate? Drink. Pyrnne is slut-shamed by her neighbors by the man she slept with gets off without scrutiny? Drink. Pyrnne's main role in the society is that of an emotional caregiver? You get the idea.

Watch the full video above to see how many chapters in we get before we pass out.

The A Plus Book Club will be back next month with our regularly scheduled live author interviews. Check back in February to see which book we'll be reading next and, as always, if there's a book you'd like to see featured, send your requests to bookclub@aplus.com.
