Travel Back In Time This Month With The A Plus Book Club

But seriously, are we Oprah's Book Club yet?

This month, we're traveling back in time to 1919 with LaShonda Katrice Barnett and her historical fiction novel, Jam On the Vine. Her book tells the tale of Ivoe Williams, the daughter of a Muslim cook and metalsmith from central-east Texas, who discovers a lifelong passion for journalism after stealing a newspaper from her mother's White employer.

That single, impulsive act set in motion a dynamic chain of events that would take Ivoe from the segregated quarter of Little Tunis to Kansas City, turning the newspaper business on its head in the process.

Not only are Emily and I excited to share this work with our A Plus readers, but even the honorary member of the A Plus Book Club, Oprah, praised the book in O, The Oprah Magazine, writing, "In an authentic and richly layered novel, history comes to life ... Barnett creates an ode to activism, writing with a scholar's eye and a poet's soul."

Well said, O, well said

We'll be discussing the novel's historical significance and modern cultural relevance with LaShonda in a Facebook Live interview on Thursday, June 22, at 10 a.m. Be sure to tune in then, but in the meantime, you know the drill: book, wine, cozy spot — everything you need for our best book club yet
