American Women Are Donating To Planned Parenthood Under Mike Pence's Name

Mike Pence has targeted Planned Parenthood with a single-mindedness unmatched by any other anti-abortion politician.

Vice president-elect Mike Pence has been one of the more prominent politicians leading the age-old battle against American women's reproductive rights. Throughout his political career, Pence sought to impose unnecessary restrictions on women seeking abortions, sponsored a bill that essentially redefined rape, and championed various anti-abortion legislation including one that required doctors to offer women the "remains" of a fetus after she's had an abortion.

But Pence's anti-abortion agenda has stretched beyond targeting Indiana's women's right to their bodies; the former governor has single-mindedly gone after Planned Parenthood, going so far as to threaten to shut down the United States government over its funding.

Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood — which many low-income men and women rely on for health services — told Politico in 2011, "He's the only one I know of who has been so completely obsessed with Planned Parenthood. This just seems to be an enormous focus of his."

Now that Pence is set to be vice president, many anticipate that reproductive rights will further erode under Donald Trump's administration. But women have already begun fighting back, this time by donating money to Planned Parenthood under Pence's name. For each donation, Pence will receive a certificate of thanks.

It's not the first time women have shown Pence that their reproductive rights are not to be messed with.

Earlier this year, after Pence signed his latest anti-abortion bill into law, Indiana women launched a campaign called Periods For Pence where they called into the then-governor's office to regale him stories of their menstrual flow.
