Fighting This Disease Isn't Easy, But Here's What Can Help

So powerful.

Every year, more than one million people in the United States are diagnosed with cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

Knowing what to say or do for a person you love that has been diagnosed is extremely difficult. We all want to help, but we don't know how.

So Buzzfeed decided to ask the people who would know best — cancer survivors.

In the video, six people candidly share what their experience with cancer was like. Their stories prove there's no one way to react to receiving a cancer diagnosis. One woman's reaction was thinking about never finishing her homework. Another survivor went straight to Fatburger and bought a burger with a fried egg on top.

While all of the survivors responded to their initial diagnosis differently, nearly all of them cited that their loved ones were what helped them cope. One of the survivors even mentioned that sometimes listening to other people's problems helped her take her mind off her own.

If you know someone who has cancer, they recommend visiting them, trying to make them laugh, and helping them keep up their positive mindset. What doesn't help is sharing experiences of others who have passed away from the disease and taking selfies with them for Facebook.
