Watch: Maya Rudolph's Rachel Dolezal Impression Is Everything

The role of a lifetime?

Whenever a public figure is caught with their pants down (literally or metaphorically), a recognizable media cycle begins: there's the breaking news, followed by the initial confusion, then the (sorta) apology tour, the endless think pieces, the backlash, and the backlash against the backlash. Our news industry operates at warp speed, so we've managed to get through all these stages of the Rachel Dolezal controversy in just under a week. Finally, we've reached this saga's inevitable conclusion: on June 22, Maya Rudolph performed an impression of Rachel Dolezal on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Predictably, it was hilarious. We could not have thought of better comedian to take on this once-in-a-lifetime role.

Rudolph explained that, since the Dolezal scandal become national news, people have been demanding that she work up an impersonation of the woman who pretended to be black (or who truly identified as another race, the jury's still out), even though she comes from a Caucasian family. Unfortunately, the actress is no longer on Saturday Night Live, where she could easily have performed this character for weeks to come. So instead, Rudolph brought her skills to Late Night, where she absolutely slayed while barely completing a sentence. Her facial expressions, and that awful wig, say it all.
