Waffle House Hero Raises Money For Shooting Victims, And The Internet Returns The Favor

"He has a four-year-old daughter ... I think her college should be paid for."

James Shaw Jr., the man who disarmed the gunman in this weekend's deadly Waffle House shooting, continued his heroism in the days afterward, setting up a GoFundMe campaign to help the victims' families. Now, the internet is giving back to him and his 4-year-old daughter.

Shaw's campaign set a goal of $15,000. As of this writing, it had raised more than $130,000 from more than 3,000 donors. On Tuesday, the Tennessee legislature presented Shaw with a resolution commending his heroism.

"I want you all to know and I'll say this again," Shaw said, according to the Huffington Post. "I didn't actually do it to save people, I did it just to save my life. And in me saving my life, I saved other lives, and I think that's probably one of the greatest things you can do."

Many have praised Shaw for his choice to raise money for those affected by the shooting, even as he himself was injured. (He received burns on his hands from grabbing the barrel of the shooter's gun, as well as a minor gunshot wound.)

Earlier this week, journalist Yashar Ali chose to repay Shaw's kindness by starting another GoFundMe. After tweeting that he thinks Shaw's daughter should have her college education paid for, he started the campaign to raise the money to make it happen. His tweet linking to the page has received 13,000 retweets — including one from Hillary Clinton.

Ali wrote on the GoFundMe page that Shaw "has shown a level of humility that has inspired many of us," adding of his young daughter, "Perhaps this money can be used for her college fund or some other education related expense. But I'd be just as happy if James used some of this money to take his family on a nice vacation."

According to USA Today, the fundraiser's initial goal of $100,000 was raised in less than 20 hours. The total has now reached more than $120,000. According to Ali, the money raised will be transferred directly to Shaw through GoFundMe.

As one donor wrote, "Mr. Shaw, who teaches by example, is the best instructor his daughter could have. This is to help her build on that foundation."
