These Incredible Animated Waves Show Just How Far CGI Has Come

This video is less than 30 seconds, but it's making waves.

A startling new video posted to YouTube by pharmdmsn made a splash on Reddit this week with its incredible demonstration of CGI-simulated waves breaking over rocks. 


The behavior and appearance of the computer-generated waves is astonishingly realistic.

According to the description, the 24-second video was created using Maxon's Cinema 4D R15, Navié's Effex 2.5, Adobe's After Effects and V-RAY for C4D 1.9, requiring a whipping 30 minutes per frame to render on V-RAY.

So what does that mean? 

In 3-D computer animation, rendering is the final process in which the goal is to capture the highest possible degree of realism at a speed that can fool the human eye. Each frame lasts only a fraction of a second, so in this case, a rendering speed of, say, 24 frames per second would mean that one second of this video took 12 hours to finish. Suffice it to say, rendering requires a lot of processing power.
