Your Social Relationships Have A Lot To Do With Your Physical Health

Quality and quantity count.

It's the beginning of a new year, which means you've probably already made a resolution to work out more and if you're like most, within a week or two, you will have broken it. 

Oh, well, maybe next year. 

But don't get discouraged just yet. As reported by Today, a new study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill reveals that you can still work on improving your health even if you don't physically work out. 

The study, which suggests that a person's social relationships affect their mortality, was conducted using data from four nationally representative surveys and included people from adolescence to old age. The data confirmed that a person's social relationships are just as important as their gym membership.


Researchers looked at blood pressure, waist circumference, inflammation, and the BMI of participants and found that especially in adolescences and older adults, those who socialized less lived a less healthy life than those who had an active social life.

In those who were older, social isolation proved to do more damage than diabetes when it came to blood pressure.

And while it appears to be quantity that matters for teens and older adults, for those who are middle age, it's the quality of your relationships that matters most.

So if you haven't already, make your 2016 New Year's resolution to get rid of any and all toxic relationships.

But don't go cancelling your gym membership yet!

Though this is reportedly the first study of its kind to definitively link social relationships to specific measures person's physical health, it doesn't mean you should stop lifting weights altogether. 

Kathleen Mullan Harris, a sociology professor at the University of North Carolina and one of the study's authors, believes that with this new information doctors and health professionals should not only stress the importance of physical health, but also social health.

So make 2016 your year to get socially and physically healthy. You can start by trying out one of these three trends that are sure to become popular in 2016.

1. Guides by online gurus

2. Any app or wearable technology-based workouts

Between the Apple Watch, Fitbit, and Polar watches it's hard not to come across someone without a fitness tracker or someone who uses an app to workout. Many fitness trackers come with apps that will connect you to other users so if you're not keen on people seeing you sweat, you can at least build relationships online. Which are just as good!

3. Trampoline exercise classes

Who said jumping on a trampoline was just for kids? Trampoline parks seem to be popping up everywhere now and many offer exercise classes that will have you burning hundreds of calories during a single workout
