See How Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s Heart Rate Spiked As He Testified To Congress

With the midterms fast approaching, plans for digital security are at the top of everyone's minds.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey may have appeared outwardly calm as he testified to Congressional committees on Wednesday, but he was apparently more nervous than he looked. The executive shared a screenshot from his Apple health tracker on Twitter, revealing just how fast his heart was racing as he fielded questions about data security, censorship and more.

Dorsey and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg both testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee this week about their respective plans to keep foreign countries from using their platforms to interfere in U.S. elections. The Twitter CEO sat in the hot seat before the House as well, responding to accusations from Republicans that Twitter censors conservative figures.

"Looking at the data, we analyzed tweets sent by all members of the House and Senate, and found no statistically significant difference between the number of times a tweet by a Democrat is viewed versus a Republican, even after our ranking and filtering of tweets has been applied," Dorsey said in his afternoon testimony, according to CBS News.

He also offered a series of apologies throughout his session, acknowledging the faults in Twitter's transparency policies and the need to overhaul its verification system. When confronted with the fact that Twitter took down more than 3,800 accounts linked to the Russian Internet Research Agency, he conceded that the company needs to better inform users of foreign influences that spread false information. "We simply haven't done enough," he said.

While Dorsey maintained a measured tone while fielding questions, things got heated in the courtroom in several occasions. At one point during his second hearing of the day, a female protestor in the crowd stood up and hurled loud accusations at the Twitter executive, accusing him of attempting to sway the election. In another instance, conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who Dorsey has famously allowed to remain active on Twitter despite backlash, crashed the CEO's hearing, even getting into a verbal altercation with Sen. Marco Rubio in the hallway.

The events of the day clearly had an inward impact on Dorsey, even as he was able to keep his outward composure. The screenshot he posted shows his heart reaching a peak of 109 beats per minute — a stark contrast to his average resting heart rate of 44 beats per minute.

As Quartz reports, that resting heart rate is significantly lower than the average male's, which typically falls between 60 to 100 beats per minute. Dorsey's rest rate is closer to that an elite athlete's, which isn't entirely surprising given the CEO's strict exercise regiment.

While Dorsey made it through his day of testimony intact, his heart rate may not be returning to its steady rate just yet. According to CNBC, Twitter's stock price sank six percent during his time in the Senate session — and the midterm elections and the attention to digital security they will require are growing closer.
