The First Time I Agreed With Donald Trump

You might agree with Trump on this too.

In the few months since Donald Trump began his run for president, his harsh rhetoric on Hispanics, Muslims, same-sex marriage, and a variety of other issues alienated numerous voters, including myself.

Though it's safe to assume I have never agreed with the political views of Trump, I was impressed by something he said during a recent Republican debate.

During this debate, Senator Ted Cruz attacked Trump for having New York Values.

"Everyone understands that the values in New York City are socially liberal. They're pro-abortion or pro-gay marriage," Cruz said. "Not a lot of conservatives come out of Manhattan."

That's when Trump responded and had his single, greatest moment of the election.

"New York is a great place, it's got great people, it's got loving people, wonderful people," Trump said. "When the World Trade Center came down, I saw something that no place on Earth could have handled more beautifully, more humanly than New York."

For once, in my opinion, Trump was correct. Republican rivals, like Marco Rubio and Chris Christie sided with Trump. And even Democrats, including Mayor Bill de Blasio and Senator Chuck Schumer, defended Trump for standing up for New York.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo beautifully summed up the meaning of New York values.

"New York is, in many ways, the epitome of what formed this nation and what keeps it strong," Cuomo told the New York Times. "The Statue of Liberty is in our harbor. We do believe in immigration, we do believe in acceptance. We do believe in community. We do believe in E pluribus unum."

I have personally experienced the warmth and generosity of New York. Since I moved here last year, I felt welcomed. New Yorkers know how to treat people with respect and how to help people in need. People treat you like you're a lifetime resident, even if you just arrived.

New Yorkers have the most positive attitude you could imagine. They are tough, diligent, pragmatic, restless and ambitious. These are the type of attributes that people across America yearn for.

The diversity is what makes this place special. The population is a beautiful combination of people from different countries, races, ethnicities, religions and sexual orientations. You can walk down the street in the city while passing a hedge fund manager and a janitor along the way. And you'll hear so many languages while walking the streets, too. New York is a melting pot in every wonderful sense of that phrase. Our differences in New York unite us under a common purpose to help each other.

It is incredible to live in a community that embraces diversity and is tolerant to all walks of life. New York is home to a prolific cultural atmosphere, and there is always something fun to do.

Everything about the city is iconic. We're home to the financial and entertainment centers of America. There is rich history in almost every neighborhood and every street corner. Many famous people called this place their home and so many world events occurred here. Every time I stare at the skyline I get this wonderful feeling inside of me.

That's what I love about New York, and those are the New York values I hold dear.
