This Ad Featuring Maya Angelou's Poem Is An Ode To Phenomenal Women Everywhere

"Phenomenal woman, that's me."

An inspiring new ad from the British organization This Girl Can uses the power of poetry to celebrate women's boundless abilities. In a one-minute, 30-second video, an excerpt from Maya Angelou's seminal poem, "Phenomenal Woman," is narrated in the background to scenes of diverse groups of women running, dancing, boxing, and doing other physical activities — including giving birth.

"It's the fire in my eyes / And the flash of my teeth / The swing in my waist / And the joy in my feet," the narrator says in the video. "I'm a woman / Phenomenally."

Since the video was posted to This Girl Can's Facebook page on Friday, it has amassed more than 4.9 million views, and many overwhelmingly positive comments. "Jiggling, sweating, lifting, taking a breather — however you do it, we think it's phenomenal," the caption on its post reads.

According to Adweek, the video was created FCB Inferno and directed by Kim Gehrig of Somesuch, whose reported preference for casting real women in her campaigns lends a buoyant authenticity to This Girl Can's video.

The organization, which celebrates "active women everywhere who are doing their thing no matter how they do it, how they look or even how sweaty they get," is on a mission to close the gender gap in sports and fitness — and judging from its empowering new ad, it may well be on its way to doing so.
