Why Hair Takes Front And Center In The 'Texture On The Runway' NYFW Show

"Letting texture serve as the inspiration for fashion."

While hair might play a supporting role to the garments showcased on the runways at New York Fashion Week, during the Texture on the Runway show, hair takes front and center. In fact, some might say, it is the mane event. 


The fashion show celebrates the natural beauty and diversity of hair, especially curly and kinky textures.

According to a press release, the event is presented by NaturallyCurly with retail partner Sally Beauty. The show features texture and curly hair brands as sponsors. In a series of presentations, the hair is celebrated via fierce runway looks with different themes, including "the goddess of earth and growth" and the "woman warriors of Wakanda" in Black Panther. The hairstyles range from beautifully full and thick styles, to extra-long braids and ponytails.

Brands that participated in the show this year included Camille Rose Naturals, Cantu, Carol's Daughter, Creme of Nature, Mielle Organics, SheaMoisture and The Mane Choice.

Co-Founder and head of business development at NaturallyCurly and the show's host, Michelle Breyer, explained the significance of the event. "Through Texture on the Runway, NaturallyCurly and our brand and retail sponsors have helped change the conversation about fashion and diversity. At Texture on the Runway, it's all about the hair." 

"Rather than hairstyles playing second fiddle to fashion, we’re letting texture serve as the inspiration for it."

NaturallyCurly have been promoting this message for two decades with the brand celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Since the Texture on the Runway show launched in 2012, it has helped further the conversation.

The brands participating in the show are encouraged to come up with their unique take on texture through afros, protective styles, twists, braids and more.
