Watch These Teens Show Us How Powerful Poetry Can Be

A captivating performance.

There is nothing more powerful than words, and a non-profit in LA is helping at-risk teens to harness that power.

Get Lit is a non-profit based out of LA that aims to boost literacy and foster a love of poetry, both written and performed.

Part of this non-profit is the Get Lit Players, a performance poetry troupe made up of high school students. The video above features Get Lit's Belissa Escobedo, Rhiannon McGavin, and Zariya Allen's performance of "Somewhere in America" at Brave New Voices, the largest international youth slam poetry competition in the world. (They placed third.)

"In every state in America, the greatest lessons are the ones you don't remember learning."

The poem tackles censorship, economic hardships, and discrimination in American schools.
