This Is The Difference Between Feeling Depressed And Having Depression

The distinction is important.

Humans are capable of experiencing complex emotions. These feelings help guide us in our social interactions and are critical to our survival. While it's perfectly normal to have negative feelings from time to time, many people have chemical imbalances that make it difficult to regulate emotion. 

Millions of American adults suffer from clinical depression, a medical condition that has physical and emotional symptoms. In addition to feeling sad, hopeless, or worried, depression can cause actual pain and abnormal sleeping or eating habits. There is even a connection between depression and the size of certain regions in the brain.

Helen Farrell, a professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, explained the realities of depression in a video for TED-Ed. This animated video does a fantastic job of talking about what depression is and what it isn't, how it differs from many other medical conditions, and the many reasons that simply having a conversation about depression can make a world of difference.
