Alabama Middle School Gets The Most Magical 'Harry Potter' Makeover

"We want them to know that we see them; they matter to us."

Educators often use Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as inspiration for decorating their classrooms. But Parkside Jr. High Ateachers Jacy Douglas and Tracey Jones decorated their classrooms with more than just a few Sorting Hats, wands, and spell books.

The Alabama teachers went all out by giving part of the school a thoroughly magical "Harry Potter" makeover.

The creative teachers decorated classrooms, hallways, and reading rooms with murals, and props inspired by Harry Potter. There are even four themed doorway arches to represent each of the Hogwarts Houses: Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Gryffindor.

The school explains on its YouTube channel that "the goal is to increase student interest and engagement with an immersive Hogwarts experience."

Douglas tells Bored Panda that the makeover started last year when they experimented with Harry Potter-themed classrooms.

"It went over so well with our students that we decided to take it a step further this year and theme our whole hallway."

The crafty teachers used donated materials and inexpensive items to transform the space. The murals were created by Aaron Sullivan, who has painted several of the school's murals over the years, according to Douglas. Furthermore, WGAL reports that Walker Bros., LTD, a local building supply store, was Parkside's "adopt-a-school" partner and donated materials for the makeover.

According to CafeMom, Parkside Jr. High is classified as a Tier 1 school with many students coming from low income backgrounds and a high poverty area so the teachers wanted to create a welcoming space for them.

"We want our classrooms to be a safe haven, where students who maybe don't have a lot of support at home, can feel loved and appreciated," Douglas told WGAL. "Even students who do have a lot of familiar support sometimes struggle during middle school, because there are so many changes happening in their lives. We want them to know that we see them; they matter to us."
