Stephen Colbert Asked Twitter Users To Share Their Brushes With American Greatness, And They Didn't Disappoint

The perfect way to celebrate Fourth of July weekend.

Stephen Colbert knew the perfect way to celebrate Fourth of July weekend, and it quickly turned into an inspiring Twitter moment showing the beauty of America.

It all started on Saturday when the talk show host tweeted a photo of himself visiting the Carl Sandburg House in Flat Rock, N.C. โ€” former home of the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and writer. Then he shared a request for his followers, asking them to share their own brushes with #AmericanGreatness while traveling.

Twitter users did not disappoint. People replied to Colbert with beautiful and meaningful photos taken at national parks, monuments, and historical sites around the country. It quickly turned into a celebration of the most positive aspects of the United States, from the beauty of nature to the power of political activism. For some, it was as simple as eating ice cream and spending time with family or taking part in a charity event.

Colbert retweeted several beautiful photos on his Twitter account. At a difficult time for the country, they provide a welcome reminder of some of the best aspects of American history and culture, and a wonderful way to celebrate Independence Day.

See some of our favorite examples below, and check out more in the #AmericanGreatness hashtag, on Colbert's Twitter feed, or in the accompanying Twitter moment.
