8 Ways To Avoid Sun Damage While Taking Summer By Storm

We all love summer. Sunburns? Not so much.

We've braved wind, rain, and freezing temperatures throughout the year, and now, finally, summer's here. People everywhere are flocking to beaches, soaking up the rays, and basking in the warmth.

After all, there are many benefits to sun exposure. For example, it can help release endorphins, stimulate nail growth, and "kick off the chemical and metabolic chain reaction that produces vitamin D," according to Harvard Health Publishing

But of course, we must be wary of the negative effects also, as too much exposure can lead to an increased risk of skin cancer, cataracts, sunburn, and more.

So, to help protect you from sun damage this summer, we've rounded up some of our favorite fashion, beauty, and lifestyle products that will make you look and feel your best while keeping you safe. In the past, we've covered products like Sundots, the "world's first gummy for sun protection," which, though not clinically tested, is a great supplement to add to your existing sun protection routine. We've also covered COOLA products, such as their Mineral Sport Lotion with SPF 30, and Rōsilliance SPF 30 BB+ Cream as well as other makeup products containing SPF.

Check out our latest recommendations below and remember, it's always important to use multiple forms of sun protection.

1. Artistry's Multi-Protect Lotion

Artistry's Multi-Protect Lotion contains SPF 30 Broad Spectrum Sunscreen and, according to the brand's website, it "features nature's coconut water and African watermelon to help nourish and hydrate skin and help protect it against the sun's harmful ultraviolet A / ultraviolet A B (UVA/UVB) rays. [It also] helps prevent signs of aging caused by the sun." The product is free of pore-clogging oils, is paraben-free, and leaves a finish that blends into all skin tones.

2. Athleta's UPF 50+ Pullover

Athleta, $69

According to  the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, your clothing can be a great first line of defense against UV radiation. Clothes with ultraviolet protection factor (UPF), such as the pullover from Athleta pictured above, will absord the sun's Ultraviolet (UV) rays into its fabric, protecting your skin. The Athleta pullover is rated UFP 50+, meaning only 2 percent of the sun's rays can make it through the fabric.

It comes in three colors, all with a relaxed fit.  Rock it over a swimsuit or tank top when you're out in the sun.

3. Patagonia's UPF 50+ hiking pants

Patagonia, $79

These versatile pants will not only be comfortable, but they'll keep your skin protected. According to Patagonia's website, the pants are a lightweight polyester-spandex material woven with a soft waistband and cuffs. They also feature pockets and can be worn all the way down or pushed up to your calf. We also love that Patagonia promotes sustainability and has made efforts to "provide a solution to the environmental crisis."

4. Suntegrity's Lip C.P.R. Natural SPF 30 Lipstick

"Suntegrity Face and Body SPF 30 products use only the best known physical block ingredient (non-nano size zinc oxide) to provide broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and super anti-oxidants and amino acids to enhance that protection and help with skin repair," Credo, a clean beauty store, explains about the brand, Suntegrity. The brand was also awarded "'Champion'" status by the EWG/Campaign for Safe Cosmetics."

Their lipstick comes in six different colors, from Sunny Blush, to Sable Shade, and Sunburst Pink. Plus, they're made without harsh chemicals to hydrate and moisturize your lips. So for those rocking lip products without proper sun protection, consider trying out one of these.

5. Mott50's Swimwear

Mott50, $118

All of Mott50's garments feature certified 50 UPF, including this stylish pink swimsuit. Their collection of sun-protective clothing also features tops, bottoms, dresses, two-piece swim, hats and cover-ups. Wear this pink swimsuit on its own or double it as a top with a pair of shorts and sandals. We also love this fiery number, perfect for a day at the beach.

6. Bare Republic's Tinted Mineral Sunscreen Lotion

Amazon, $15.95

For those living an eco-friendly lifestyle, Bare Republic's products may become your new best friends. Their Tinted Face Mineral Sunscreen Lotion contains SPF 30 and is cruelty-free, non-GMO, gluten-free, water resistant for 40 minutes, and free of active chemical sunscreens. Plus — and we can attest — it has a delicious smell.

"We demand a product that can protect our skin without compromising our health, performance, wallet — and most importantly — the very spots we like to play in," it says on Bare Republic's website. It also explains that their sunscreens are biodegradable and reef-friendly, naturally scented (think Coco Vanilla, Citrus Cooler, and more) and come as lotions, sprays, sticks, and balms.

We think the vegan tinted product is perfect for all your sunscreen needs plus a little extra glow. You can also check out more of their products here

7. COOLA's Scalp & Hair Mist

"UV rays can make hair brittle and appear frayed," New York City dermatologist Kavita Mariwalla tells Allure magazine. "Sunlight is drying and can lighten hair simply from exposure, [and] your scalp, like any other skin on the body, is susceptible to skin cancer."

One product that can help with that is COOLA's Organic Scalp & Hair Mist containing SPF 30. COOLA recommends using it before heading out into the sun and reapplying as often as needed. You can spray it directly onto the scalp and onto wet or dry hair. Plus, it's lightweight, helps prevent your hair color from fading, is water resistant for up to 80 minutes, has a Natural Ocean Salted Sage scent, is vegan, and is reef safe/reef friendly, it says on their website. Mariwalla also "prefers chemical blockers (like avobenzone) because they don't leave a white cast," Allure reports, which this COOLA product has. Not too shabby.

8. Crap Eyewear Sunglasses

Don't forget about those eyeballs! You'll need to protect them from the sun, too. In fact, sun damage to your eyes can happen year round, so make it a habit of wearing UV-blocking sunglasses. "... Too much exposure to UV light raises the risks of eye diseases, including cataract, growths on the eye, and cancer. Strong exposure to snow reflection can also quickly cause painful damage called snow blindness," it says on the American Academy of Ophthalmology's website.

We're recommending these trendy cat-eye sunglasses from Crap Eyewear in one of their four colors: Havana Tortoise, Cherry, Black, or White. The lenses also offer 100 percent UVA/UBB protection.

"We design our shades a block from the beach at our Venice HQ – sun protection matters to us. Our sunglasses are handcrafted with premium, optical-grade materials to ensure maximum durability, comfort and 100 percent protection from harmful UV rays," it says on their website.

We're also keen on their "The Bikini Vision" glasses, "The Sweet Leaf" style, and "The New Riddim" pairs, all of which are gender-neutral.

With that, we think it's time you got out and enjoyed your summer.
