A Popular App ‘Forgot’ What It Was Going To Tell You In Order To Raise Awareness Of Alzheimer’s Disease

What if the app you rely on to tell you the names of songs suddenly forgot the tunes?

For Shazam U.K. users, that scenario became reality when the music-recognition app took part in an effort called The Day Shazam Forgot to raise awareness about Alzheimer's disease.

When users tried using the app as they would any other day, Shazam couldn't seem to place the song's singer or recognize the lyrics it was tasked to identify.

It sent a strong message about the disease, which is a global problem for the aging population. But it's not just impacting the elderly. In the United States, it's estimated that about a half a million people younger than age 65 have some form of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. Still, the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease doubles every five years beyond age 65. In England and Wales, dementia and Alzheimer's is the leading cause of death.

After Shazam's momentary forgetfulness, the app generated the song the user was looking for, but it came with a message: an ad for the nonprofit organization Alzheimer's Research UK. Reportedly more than 5,000 visited the donation page as a result of the campaign.
