This Teen Sewed A Dress The Night Before Prom So She Could Go With Her Best Friend

She's been sewing since she was 8 years old.

Shami Oshun didn't plan on attending her school's prom, but she decided to buy a ticket at the last minute so she could go with her BFF. The 17-year-old from California told HuffPost, "My best friend really wanted to go and I didn't want her to go alone."

Oshun may have had the ticket, but she still needed the dress.

Instead of simply buying one, the teenager decided to create her own the night before prom.

And she even had time to document the extensive process on Twitter.

Oshun has been sewing since she was 8 years old. She even has her own online clothing store,, where she sells her designs. However, sewing a prom dress in less than 24 hours is a difficult task even for experienced sewers.

And Oshun made it even more of challenge by designing the look as opposed to using a ready-made pattern.

The teenager explained that she bought $15 worth of purple tulle fabric then got to work on her dress, using a strapless dress she had as a base.

She worked for a few hours the night before prom, but had to stop when she stepped on a needle

On the day of prom, Oshun continued to work and persevered when her machine broke down, by hand sewing her dress.

But in the end, she finished the dress in time for the big dance.

Throughout the process, Oshun gained a number of fans on social media and the story of her dress has now gone viral.

Reflecting back on the experience, the Bay Area teen told BuzzFeed News, "I didn't really have an idea of what the dress was going to look like. I was worried it wasn't going to be finished."

Well she did finish it, and now has one truly memorable prom experience even before the dance ever began.
