In An Emotional Wimbledon Interview, Serena Williams Paid Tribute To Her Fellow Moms

"I was playing for you today."

On Saturday, seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams lost out on another title, as German player Angelique Kerber took home this year's trophy. Following her loss, Williams gave an emotional interview in which she paid tribute to her fellow moms.

Williams, who played in the tournament 10 months after giving birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia, teared up as she shared, "I was really happy to get this far. It's obviously disappointing, but I can't be disappointed. I have so much to look forward to."

Williams denied that she is a "supermum," telling the interviewer, "No, I'm just me, and that's all I can be. To all the moms out there, I was playing for you today." She complimented her "friend" Kerber on her win and added, "I look forward to just continuing to be back out here and do what I do best."

Earlier in the tournament, Williams received support from her fellow moms when she tweeted that she had missed her daughter's first steps while she was training. Users shared their own similar stories and offered words of encouragement. Before that, during the French Open in May, Williams said she wore a catsuit to inspire other moms to feel confident.

Following her time at Wimbledon this year, Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian also showed his support for the star by writing a tribute message on Instagram, in which he recalled the difficulties his wife experienced after giving birth.

"Days after our baby girl was born, I kissed my wife goodbye before surgery and neither of us knew if she would be coming back," he wrote. "We just wanted her to survive—10 months later, she's in the #Wimbledon final."

Ohanian congratulated Kerber and wrote that Williams "will be holding a trophy again soon—she's got the greatest one waiting at home for her. Our family knows she'll win many more trophies, too." He added, "She's just getting started. And I couldn't be more proud."
