In A Touching Birthday Tribute, Sarah Michelle Gellar Shares Why Friend Shannen Doherty Inspires Her

"I have watched her inspire and give hope to the world."

Sarah Michelle Gellar shared a touching birthday tribute to her friend and fellow actress Shannen Doherty on Instagram Wednesday, and it's making us want to call our own best friends. Gellar has supported Doherty, who just turned 46, through her public battle with breast cancer, a subject the actress touched on in her latest message.

"Where do I even start with this birthday girl?!? She's everything," Gellar wrote alongside a photo of the two of them. "She's inspired me … well since … even before I called her a friend. But over the last year, I have watched her inspire and give hope to the world. I thought I knew how tough she was, but I didn't even have a clue to her power."

"When I think twice about leaving the house without makeup, Shannen shaved her head on the public stage," Gellar continued. "When I fiercely guard my privacy, she opened her life, her struggles, her fears and her journey to help people she has never even met."

Doherty has been documenting her experience fighting cancer on social media over the past year or so, including the process of shaving her head, and undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. The actress has said of her decision to share her journey with the public, "It's easier to live with having cancer if I know I'm helping at least one person."

Gellar closed her post by saying Doherty is "a true friend to everyone" and explaining that her great laugh is why she chose the picture she did. "To the fiercest, most loyal friend I know … let's party like it's your birthday!!! I love you," she wrote.

Doherty, meanwhile, has shared tributes of her own to Gellar. She recently posted on Instagram that she was watching her friend's appearance on Watch What Happens Live, writing how proud she is of her success: "I'm privileged to know you and love you."
