Samantha Bee Apologizes For Accidentally 'Distracting' Everyone From What Really Matters

The comic ended her apology with a worthy goal.

On Wednesday night, Samantha Bee kicked off her weekly show Full Frontal with an apology to her viewers.

Last week, the comic had referred to presidential advisor Ivanka Trump as a "feckless cunt" for allowing her father's administration to separate immigrant parents from their children along the border. An immediate outcry from both liberals and conservatives led to the show apologizing to its audience for the pre-written script.

"A lot of people were offended and angry that I used an epithet to describe the president's daughter and adviser last week," Bee said in a clip. "It is a word I have used many times on the show many times, hoping to reclaim it. This time, I used it as an insult. I crossed the line. I regret it and I do apologize for that."

The controversial segment in question highlighted how President Donald Trump's administration is reportedly actively imprisoning asylum seekers for the misdemeanor offense of crossing the border. As a part of this process, immigration agents are taking children from their parents and sending them to separate facilities, and then not reuniting them to their parents when they are released, typically a few days after the arrest.

"You know, Ivanka, that's a beautiful photo of you and your child, but let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dad's immigration practices, you feckless cunt," Bee said on the air.

In an previous interview with A Plus, Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU's Immigrants' Rights Project, said the "zero tolerance" policy of separating parents from their children was "unprecedented."

"This issue is not divided along normal immigration lines," Gelernt said. "Conservative and liberal commentators are just repulsed by the idea that a 2 or 3-year-old is being taken away from their parents and sitting in a facility without their parents."

During her apology, Bee explained that many women have heard the word she used in the worst moments of their lives, and she understands that some would rather forget it completely than reclaim it. She also addressed the men who were offended by her words, but then quipped that she "didn't really care about that," to laughs from her studio audience.

With her final words, Bee expressed remorse that she distracted from the actual issue — which is that migrant children are being taken from their parents.

"I would do anything to help those kids," Bee said. "I hate that this distracted from them, so to them I am also sorry. And look: If you are worried about the death of civility, don't sweat it... I'm really sorry I said that word, but you know what? Civility is just nice words. Maybe we should all worry a little bit more about the niceness of our actions."
