Salma Hayek Donates $100,000 To Help Those Affected By Earthquakes In Mexico

"I have lived through the aftermath of a disaster of this magnitude and it’s horrific."

Just 11 days after an 8.1-magnitude hit off the coast of Mexico and killed at least 90, a 7.1-magnitude quake hit close to Mexico City and left further destruction there and in surrounding states in its wake, and killed at least 216 people, according to CNN. Salma Hayek is one celebrity speaking out about the tragedy and donating to help those desperately in need.

"After the 1985 earthquake in Mexico City, I was evacuated from my building. A lot of friends died, including an uncle that was very, very close to me," Hayek said. "I have lived through the aftermath of a disaster of this magnitude and it's horrific."

Having been in a situation such as this one before — specifically an earthquake that killed many, with 10,000 being the death toll most commonly reported — the 51-year-old is using the platform she has as an Emmy- and Oscar-nominated actress to rally support for her home country.

Hayek's message in English:

"I am starting a Crowdrise to try to raise money to help the families that are going through this nightmare right now in Mexico," Hayek continued. "I implore to your hearts, to the goodness of your hearts, to your compassion to help. Anything that you can give will make a big difference. For starters, I will match the first $100,000 that are donated."

So far, as of the time this article was originally published, Hayek's Crowdrise page has raised more than $267,000 by nearly 2,800 people in just one day to benefit UNICEF USA's relief efforts in Mexico.

Hayek's message in Spanish:

As People notes, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling tweeted how she had recently been in Mexico City and encouraged people to donate. In addition, actress Eva Longoria tweeted that her husband, José Bastón, and her family were in the country's capital at the time but were all, thankfully, safe.
