Reebok Tweets A Spot-On Response To Trump's Comment About The French First Lady

"Are you a world leader greeting the spouse of a head of state?"

A controversial comment from President Donald Trump sparked a viral response from an unlikely source on Twitter over the weekend, as the sneaker brand Reebok tweeted a flow chart that could prove useful to more than just the president.

The comment in question occurred last week, during President Trump's visit to France. While greeting French President Emmanuel Macron's wife Brigitte Macron, Trump remarked on her physical appearance, telling her, "You're in such good shape." In video of the meeting, Trump turns to President Macron and repeats, "She's in such good physical shape," before calling the first lady "beautiful."

The moment drew backlash on social media, with some calling it harassment. It's the latest in a long list of sexist behavior from Trump — from last year's infamous Access Hollywood tape in which he boasts about groping women, to his more recent remark about a female reporter's "nice smile."

Still, not everyone was quick to condemn Trump's words, with some on social media defending him as merely offering a "compliment."

To help Trump and others understand when such a remark is and is not appropriate, Reebok tweeted a helpful flow chart on Friday. The image soon went viral for its humorous approach to an important message.

"When is it appropriate to say, 'You're in such good shape ... Beautiful'?" the chart asks, before offering a variety of scenarios.

One scenario reads, "Are you a world leader greeting the spouse of a head of state?" In that case, the answer is no, such a comment is not appropriate.

The graphic also notes other, non-presidential situations which are which the comment would not be appropriate, including: being in an elevator with a woman, working out next to a woman, and waiting in line next to a woman at a coffee shop. The tweet emphasizes just how ubiquitous harassment can be.

In fact, according to the punch line of Reebok's chart, the only situation in which such a comment actually would be appropriate is if you've just found "a forgotten action figure from your youth, unscathed after decades, in your parents' basement."

A Reebok spokesperson explained the clever social media move to Mashable. "Reebok believes that we should all strive to Be More Human in our lives: to push and challenge our boundaries physically, mentally and socially. That also means supporting one another in all of those ways," they said, adding, "It seems there is still a lot of confusion about how to do that, and perhaps this little reminder will help."

It certainly received plenty of attention. As of this writing, the tweet has earned more than 40,000 retweets, with many users applauding the brand for speaking out on an issue that applies to more than just the president.

President Macron himself recently defended his wife against sexist and ageist comments regarding their 24-year age difference, saying, "It says a lot about the misogyny in France. There is a big problem with the presentation of society and how they see the place of a woman."
