Puerto Rican Cancer Patients Were Stranded After Hurricane Maria Until Pitbull Flew To The Rescue

"Thank God we’re blessed to help. Just doing my part."

While some big names are donating their money to help the people of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria — which is considered the most powerful storm to hit there in nearly a century — left the island devastated, one celebrity is assisting another way. Pitbull, whose real name is Armando Christian Pérez, is proving that the nickname of Mr. Worldwide is quite accurate.

The 36-year-old — an entertainer born to Cuban parents best known for songs like "I Know You Want Me," "Give Me Everything," and "Timber" — has provided assistance to cancer patients in Puerto Rico by flying them on a private plane to be able to continue getting their chemo treatments in the United States.

Jenniffer González, Puerto Rico's sole congressperson (though a non-voting member), tweeted in Spanish to thank Pitbull for being a good Samaritan and assisting some of the island's people in desperate need of help. Let's not forget that Puerto Rican citizens are U.S. citizens, too.

On his part, Pitbull hasn't spoken out about this — opting instead to keep the act under wraps by not promoting it on social media — but he did provide a statement to both E! Online and the New York Daily News that reads: "Thank God we're blessed to help. Just doing my part."

The situation there has been described as "apocalyptic" in terms of the damage done, with the latest death toll being at least 10 thus far and most left without power or cellphone service. Gov. Ricardo Rosselló has said the island is facing a humanitarian crisis.

Jennifer Lopez (who is of Puerto Rican descent) has already shown support for the island country by donating $1 million toward relief efforts and fellow entertainer Daddy Yankee (who was born in Puerto Rico) followed suit and donated $1 million as well. For Pitbull's part, though, it proves that an actionable deed can be just as if not more helpful than a monetary contribution — though both are obviously welcome in times of need.
