This Candid Subway Photo Captures What Makes America Great., According To Twitter

"I'm black and my best friends are Asian, white and Indian and it's nothing remarkable at all."

New York City has long been a melting pot of people from different cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and even with xenophobia and racism seemingly on the rise, the Big Apple has still maintained its unique, multicultural identity. Case in point: This photo of diverse subway riders that's gone viral.

The photo below shot to the top of Reddit (on Independence Day, no less!) because it's a picture-perfect illustration of diversity and acceptance at their finest. The snap shows a young girl clearly enthralled by a baby sitting on a woman's lap beside her. As noted by Redditors, the clothing worn by the commuters in the picture — including a head covering worn by the woman on the far-right, and a mid-length dress on the woman holding the baby — suggests that the two families' cultural backgrounds differ.

The picture was taken by a Twitter user named Rachel MacKnight on July 2, and has already received over 12,000 retweets and nearly 49,000 likes. As MacKnight wrote along with the snap, "This is what makes America great."

Though many agreed, others questioned why a photo like this is still perceived as special. "This is beautiful, but it's kinda sad and somewhat shocking that till this day and year (2017!), occurrences as this may come as an oddity," one Twitter user wrote.

As one Reddit user shared, "I'm black and my best friends are Asian, white and Indian and it's nothing remarkable at all. Whenever I see a pic of different races getting along making it to the front page, it confuses me to see it being thought of as something unique."

And, despite the hateful rhetoric that exists today, these users made a valid point: This photo really isn't anything out of the ordinary, especially in NYC.

As soon as we saw this picture, we were immediately reminded of a similar snap taken back in April, which featured a Hasidic Jewish couple sitting on the subway next to a Muslim woman feeding her baby. What's more? The photo was taken by a Taoist. "This is my America," the poster wrote.

It's heartwarming to know that, despite some pockets of resistance, diversity is still very much a part of "normal" American life.
