These Are The Most Popular Honeymoon Destinations In 2018

If you're getting married this year, you're gonna want to read this.

First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the fun part: the honeymoon. It's the perfect way to connect as a newly married couple and start your life together as your most relaxed, well-rested selves.

While going on a honeymoon is arguably the best part of getting married, deciding where to go can be an unexpected challenge for engaged couples already stressed out by the wedding planning process. That may be why some tried-and-true honeymoon destinations, such as Hawaii, are always popular, while others, such as Iceland, come and go with the latest trends.

To figure out which honeymoon destinations were the most popular this year, wedding registry website Zola surveyed more than 1,000 couples tying the knot in 2018. These were the top five honeymoon hot spots:

The Carribean came in first, replacing last year's most popular honeymoon destination, Hawaii. This year, the big island came in third after Italy. To round out the top five destinations, Mexico and Greece were ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.

These destination choices fit into this year's overall honeymoon trends, according to additional survey data from Zola. The most popular honeymoon type was "beach destination," with 46 percent of couples surveyed opting for a relaxing, tropical vacay. "City exploration" was the next most-popular honeymoon type, followed by "outdoor adventure," "cruise," and "road trip."

More than ever before, engaged couples are putting a greater focus on their honeymoons. Earlier this year, a survey of 2,000 recently married people found that newlyweds wished they'd spent more on their honeymoon. In fact, it was couples' top spending regret, showing an increased emphasis on the experiential parts of a wedding.

So it should come as no surprise that travel has become a growing wedding gift category. On Zola, a $100 Airbnb gift card was the second most popular gift right behind the traditional KitchenAid Stand Mixer. Many couples are also registering for cash funds to cover popular honeymoon activities, like drinks with a view and snorkeling for two, in addition to physical gifts.
