The Life-Changing Lesson Netflix Star Millie Bobby Brown Learned When She Shaved Her Head

"Being bald was the best thing I ever did."

Fans of the Netflix series Stranger Things have praised actress Millie Bobby Brown for her performance as telekinetic character Eleven. However, the shaved head she sported for the role in the first season didn't always inspire the most positive reactions in real life. Brown recently told W magazine about how the negativity ultimately inspired her.

The 14-year-old said that shaving her head was "a big deal," and detailed both the pros and cons. "On the one hand, it was cool. When you're bald, rain feels like a head massage," she said, describing how she would happily walk in the rain with her new style. "But on the other hand, people stared at me, wondering whether I was sick. Some would even laugh at me, without knowing whether I was or wasn't sick."

It would be easy for anyone, young or old, to feel self-conscious about such an insensitive response, but Brown took a more positive approach, and set out to share an important lesson with the world.

"It was hurtful, but their attitude taught me something about compassion," she explained. "In the end, being bald was the best thing I ever did—being different changed my life. I wanted to embrace my baldness and, hopefully, inspire people. And, now, that's become my message to the world."

Brown has been spreading that message since Stranger Things first took the binge-watching world by storm. In 2016, the actress spoke about a desire to inspire girls who had lost their hair due to chemotherapy or alopecia, sharing, "I think that I can show them that it's cool to have short hair."

Then earlier this year, Brown tweeted about missing her shaved head, calling the experience "empowering" and reminding fans, "You don't need hair to be beautiful. You are beautiful with or without." Many followers replied with photos of themselves showing off their shorter hairstyles and sharing how she inspired them to feel confident.

We love that Brown is still sending this message of self-love to her fans now that her hair has grown out, and we look forward to seeing where her career takes her — bald or not.
