Here Are 10 Misconceptions About Pirates You Really Need To Know

Arrgg, matey!

It's hard to find someone who can't appreciate a little bit of pirate culture mixed in with modern day life.

Pirates are a perennial Halloween costume favorite, and there's even Talk Like A Pirate Day (which is observed more passionately than many religious holidays). Facebook, until very recently, even had Pirate as a language that users could enjoy.

It's easy to see the appeal, because what's not to love?

Pirates are gritty, with a no-holds-barred approach to committing dastardly deeds and sending those who stand in their way to walk the plank to Davy Jones' Locker. Aside from the possibility of getting scurvy, who wouldn't want to sail across the ocean while singing sea shanties and drinking rum straight from the barrel?

There's really only one problem: that's not even a little bit reflective of how pirate life is or ever was.

In the most recent Misconceptions video for Mental Floss, Elliott Morgan breaks down 10 of the most common misconceptions about pirates.

He takes on ideas about why they wore eye patches, who was most likely to be aboard a pirate ship, and what pirate-speak was really like.
