Meghan Markle Lends Her Voice To The #MeToo And Time's Up Conversation

"It makes such a tremendous difference."

Meghan Markle took the opportunity during a royal event on Wednesday to share her thoughts on women's empowerment, and lend her support to campaigns such as the #MeToo and Time's Up movements, which are calling out sexual misconduct and offering a platform for women to speak out.

The comments occurred during a forum for The Royal Foundation, a charitable organization founded by Prince Harry and Prince William, for which Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, is now a Patron. Markle, who is set to marry Prince Harry in May, will become the fourth Patron.

"You'll often hear people say, 'Well, you're helping women find their voices,'" Markle shared during an onstage conversation with the royals. "And I fundamentally disagree with that, because women don't need to find a voice. They have a voice. They need to feel empowered to use it, and people need to be encouraged to listen."

The Suits actress continued, "I think right now in the climate that we're seeing, with so many campaigns — #MeToo and Time's Up — there is no better time than to really continue to shine a light on women feeling empowered and people really helping to support them, men included in that. It makes such a tremendous difference."

Markle shared that she's ready to "hit the ground running" in her philanthropic efforts after her wedding. Although she couldn't share many specifics, she did say that she has been "fortunate enough to meet with some incredible women" already, not only in the U.K., but also in countries such as Rwanda and India.

It's certainly not the first time Markle has spoken out for women. During a speech at a U.N. Women conference in 2015, she shared that when she was just 11 years old, she wrote a letter complaining about a sexist TV advertisement for dish soap — and how the outdated slogan was changed one month later.

Following the announcement of their engagement, Markle shared that she would quit acting to focus on her and Prince Harry's charitable work.  "I don't see it as giving anything up," she said of the decision. "I just see it as a change. It's a new chapter."
