Maxine Waters Gave The Internet An Empowering New Catchphrase While Questioning The Treasury Secretary

"Reclaiming my time."

Rep. Maxine Waters' no-nonsense approach to politics has given the Internet a new favorite catchphrase.

The Democratic congresswoman from California — affectionately nicknamed "Auntie Maxine" by some supporters — questioned Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin on Thursday during a hearing with the House Financial Services Committee. According to The Hill, Waters asked Mnuchin why he hadn't responded to a letter she sent in May requesting records concerning President Trump's financial ties to Russia.

When Mnuchin began thanking Waters for her service to California instead of immediately answering her question, Waters uttered three simple words in response — "reclaiming my time."

"Let me just say to you, thank you for your compliments about how great I am, but I don't want to waste my time on me," she told Mnuchin. (The Hill reports that lawmakers typically get only about five minutes for questioning.)

When Mnuchin then complained about being interrupted to Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling, Waters once again spoke over him to reclaim her time. "What he failed to tell you was, when you're on my time, I can reclaim it," she told him.

The back-and-forth continued, as Mnuchin once again put off answering the question, and Waters repeatedly announced that she was "reclaiming my time."

"The time belongs to the gentlelady from California," Chairman Hensarling reminded Mnuchin.

Many on social media praised Waters for calling out Mnuchin's failure to answer her question, making it clear that her time is valuable. The phrase "reclaiming my time" was soon adopted as an empowering catchphrase or rallying cry, particularly for women — some suggested it be used in response to "manterruptions." The phrase even got a gospel remix.
