Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan Announce Daughter's Birth With A Letter Celebrating The Magic Of Childhood

"You only get to be a child once, so don't spend it worrying too much about the future."

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan took to Facebook to share the joyful news that they had welcomed a baby girl named August. In addition to sharing a happy family photo, the parents revealed an open letter to the little girl about the world they hope she grows up in and the magic of childhood.

The letter begins by welcoming August into the world and explaining how Zuckerberg and Chan also wrote a letter to their eldest daughter, Max, when she was born. The previous letter outlined how they hoped Max would grow up in a world with fewer diseases, greater equality, and stronger communities, and they pledged to advance things by donating 99 percent of their Facebook shares (valued at approximately $45 billion) throughout their lifetime.

The parents explained, "We wrote that with all the advances in science and technology, your generation should live dramatically better lives than ours, and we have a responsibility to do our part to make that happen. Even though headlines often focus on what's wrong, we still believe these positive trends will win out. We're optimists about your generation and the future."

Rather than focusing purely on the future, Zuckerberg and Chan are also writing to August about the importance of childhood.

"The world can be a serious place. That's why it's important to make time to go outside and play," they stated.

Chan and Zuckerberg acknowledge that August will be busy when she's older, so they hope she takes the time to smell the flowers and put all the leaves she wants in her bucket now. They hope she will read, invent her own stories, and ride the carousel with her sister.

"I hope you run as many laps around our living room and yard as you want. And then I hope you take a lot of naps. I hope you're a great sleeper. And I hope even in your dreams you can feel how much we love you, " the letter continues.

"Childhood is magical. You only get to be a child once, so don't spend it worrying too much about the future, " the parents stated. "You've got us for that, and we'll do everything we possibly can to make sure the world is a better place for you and all children in your generation."

Zuckerberg and Chan end the letter by expressing their love for the newborn and revealing how excited they are to go on this journey with her.

The heartfelt letter comes shortly after Zuckerberg wrote a Facebook post explaining that he would be taking paternity leave when August was born. Zuckerberg previously took time off when his first daughter, Max, was born back in 2015, and his post highlighted the benefits to families of paternal leave. Plus, it called attention to the fact that 86 percent of American employees don't have access to paid parental leave and how it's important to change that for the benefit of everyone.
