These Volunteers Dressed Up NICU Babies Like Gifts To Help Make The Holidays Special For Families

"Showing how beautiful these little fighters are."

All babies are gifts, but those who are in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are especially precious. To help show just what treasures these babies are, the staff at Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City and the March of Dimes in Kansas City came together to do something special for the families just in time for the holidays.

They had Santa Claus deliver special packages for approximately 31 babies in the NICU.

Each family received a hand-crocheted Santa hat or cap with a bow, a keepsake holiday book, a hand-crocheted Santa bag filled with candy, and a keepsake "Twas the Night Before Christmas" card with their baby's footprint.

Families who celebrate Hanukkah were gifted with blue and silver presents, while those who celebrate Kwanzaa were given red, green, gold, and black gifts. The babies were then dressed in their outfits so they resembled little presents.

The event was captured by three volunteer photographers from March of Dimes who are all moms of former NICU babies themselves.

March of Dimes is an organization that is dedicated to ending premature birth and other problems that threaten babies. They provide support and information to aid families with premature babies, like the ones in the NICU at Saint Luke's Hospital.

They understand that babies can spend weeks or even months in the NICU before they can go home. So, giving the families an opportunity to celebrate the holidays together is a special experience.

Photographer Helen Ransom from Faces You Love Photography wrote to A Plus that this photo shoot may have had a holiday theme, but the photos are something that the group does for families all year round. "I love doing these NICU photos each month. (They aren't usually themed — just capturing NICU life and showing how beautiful these little fighters are). They give me the chance to gift the kinds of photos I wish I had of my own preemies when they were in the NICU."

Even though the families are in the hospital, they are able to make memories and celebrate these milestones together.
