News That Manatees Are No Longer Endangered Comes One Day After Manatee Appreciation Day

But there is still more work to be done.

There is good news coming out of the animal kingdom recently.

On Thursday March 30, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services changed the status of manatees from “endangered” to “threatened.”

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services explained on its website that the downgrading was due to successful conversation efforts.

"The U.S. Department of the Interior announced the downlisting of the West Indian manatee from endangered to threatened. Notable increases in manatee populations and improvements in its habitat allowed the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to change the species' status under the Endangered Species Act (ESA),"  they wrote, "The downlisting comes after diverse conservation efforts and collaborations by Florida and other manatee states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Caribbean nations, public and private organizations and citizens, there have been notable increases in manatee populations and improvements in its habitat."

The good news came one day after Manatee Appreciation Day.

Even though the downgrading is a step in the right direction, the agency points out there is more work to be done as manatees are still considered threatened. Plus, there are many other endangered animals that need our attention.

Manatees will continue to be protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, an act which protects numerous types of animals within the waters of the United States.

It is important that we do our part and think of long-term solutions.

Defenders and those who are part of the Humane Society list various ways we can help preserve the manatee population, such as ensuring their habitats are protected, attending safe boating classes, and reducing boating speeds in areas where manatees are visible.

By making small changes, we can make a big impact.
