This Sexual Harassment Survivor Worried No One Would Believe Her. So She Used Facebook Live.

People are using technology to amplify their voices — and the voices of others.

A 21-year-old transgender woman in Hawaii harnessed the power of Facebook Live to expose her supervisor's alleged sexual harassment.

Makana Milho was completing six days of community service to have her criminal record expunged. While cleaning restrooms for Honolulu's parks and recreation department, she alleges that her manager made numerous sexual advances toward her.

"The universe was spinning," Milho told The Daily Beast. "I thought he could do basically anything to me. I felt my power was stripped away from me."

Milho said that her supervisor tried to hold her hand, and punched and slapped her buttocks. He also asked for sexual favors in exchange for letting her leave work early.

Fearful for her life and worried that no one would believe her story about the hostile work environment, she recorded the incidents on Facebook Live.

In three separate recordings on July 22, Milho was able to document the alleged sexual harassment. Her Facebook Live video received over 197,000 views.

"I didn't expect it to go viral," Milho told The Daily Beast. "What people don't get is that I did it for my own personal safety, as proof. I didn't expect people to share it and share it and watch."

Although Milho deleted the Facebook videos due to hurtful comments she received, she tagged the Honolulu Police Department in the post so that they could see it.

The city worker depicted in the video, 47-year-old Harold Villanueva Jr., was arrested and charged with fourth-degree sexual assault.

Milho is far from the first person who has felt powerless and used social media to speak out in a powerful way. The girlfriend of Philando Castile recorded his fatal shooting by a police officer on Facebook Live. And in June, a rape survivor in Minnesota blogged about her experiences to shed more light on her story.
