People Are Praising This Imam Who Shielded The London Attack Suspect From Bystanders

"The extraordinary decency and courage of this act has brought me to tears this morning."

An assailant drove a van into pedestrians outside a mosque in London's Finsbury Park early Monday. One person was reportedly killed and 10 others injured in what London Mayor Sadiq Khan called a "horrific terrorist attack."

The van's driver was arrested after being detained by people at the scene. Bystanders were understandably angry, but according to Metro, the imam from the Muslim Welfare House near the attack called for calm as he and others reportedly formed a barrier around the suspect while an officer was putting him into the police van.

In an interview with Sky News, per the Huffington Post, Toufik Kacimi, the chief executive of the Muslim Welfare House, said of the incident, "People grabbed him outside and started hitting him ... Our imam, Mohammed Mahmoud, went there and saved him. He saved his life basically ... The imam of the mosque saved the life of the attacker."

The imam, as well as those who pinned down the attacker, are being praised on social media for their peaceful actions. Author J.K. Rowling shared a link to the story on Twitter, writing, "The extraordinary decency and courage of this act has brought me to tears this morning. I hope this imam gets the recognition he deserves."

"We have worked very hard over decades to build a peaceful and tolerant community here in Finsbury Park and we totally condemn any act of hate that tries to drive our wonderful community apart," the Muslim Welfare House said in a statement after the attack.

The statement went on to say, "We would appeal for calm at this time. It is unhelpful for there to be speculation about the incident. All of our efforts should be towards getting justice for the victims and ensuring our community stays the diverse, tolerant and welcome place we know it to be. We call on all, including the media, to act responsibly at this time."
