LeBron James Was Once An At-Risk Kid In Ohio. Now He's Helping Others Like Him In A Major Way.

He hasn't forgotten where he's from.

LeBron James is taking the act of giving back via educational opportunities to a whole new level.

It was recently announced that the LeBron James Family Foundation's I PROMISE Program, an organization started by the NBA star himself, will open a school for at-risk kids in Akron, Ohio, come fall 2018, having partnered with the Ohio city's public school system.

The school will be aptly named the I PROMISE School and, upon opening, will service students in the third and fourth grades. The following year will see the first and second grades added. Beyond that, the plan is for everything up to the eighth grade be included by 2022. Students who qualify for the school will be those who need extra attention to not fall behind their peers.

"This school is so important to me because our vision is to create a place for kids in Akron who need it most — those that could fall through the cracks if we don't do something," James said in a press release on his foundation's website.

James — who was raised by his single mother, Gloria, growing up — is very proud of this venture that has been six years in the making, calling it "my legacy" and "only the start." During that time, James has helped 1,100 kids to better themselves.

"We've learned over the years what works and what motivates them, and now we can bring all of that together in one place along with the right resources and experts," the Cleveland Cavaliers player added. "If we get to them early enough, we can hopefully keep them on the right track to a bigger and brighter future for themselves and their families."

These are just plans at this point. A formal proposal for the school will be submitted for the school board to approve in October. We're crossing our fingers that things get off the ground for James and this awesome new venture.
