7 Reasons Why People Who Kiss More Might Be Healthier

Kissing. Smooching. Making Out. Pecking. Snogging. Tongue tangoing. We can call it different names, but can all agree kissing is pretty great. 

Kissing is so great in fact that it has its own official day. But while July 6 may be International Kissing Day, really every day should be a smooching day because who doesn't want to have that weak-in-the-knees, dreamy feeling while puckering up every day of the year?

And if you want another reason to love kissing, here's one for you: Puckering up can actually have a positive impact on your health and well-being.

1. Smooching boosts your immunity.

Swapping saliva has long been thought to help boost your immunity. Reader's Digest discussed a study from the Medical Hypotheses  journal, where it could help increase women's immunity against Cytomegalovirus, a mouth-to-mouth disease that can cause "infant blindness and other birth defects if the mother is a carrier during pregnancy." 

2. It exercises the muscles in your face.

You probably don't do any face work when you're at the gym, but kissing is good exercise for the muscles in your face. CNN sites Andréa Demirjian, author of Kissing: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about One of Life's Sweetest Pleasures who says a hot-and-heavy makeout session works those muscles. This can help keep your face taught, keeping you looking younger. 

And unlike anti-aging creams, kissing costs nothing.

3. Kissing alleviates headaches and cramps.

If you have a headache or PMS cramps, you may not want to indulge in kissing, but it could be a better reliever than any pain medication. Demirjian says blood vessels get dilated during a kissing session which helps reduce your symptoms.

4. It reduces stress and improves your mood.

If you had any problems before a kissing marathon, you may not remember them afterwards. While you're making out with your partner, your brain releases dopamine and serotonin which help make you feel good. At the same time, your cortisol (aka the stress hormone) levels are reduced states Doctor Yael Varnado.

5. You burn calories.

Kissing may not be the first thing that comes to mind when we think of calorie burning, but it can help you burn off a chocolate or two. An intense makeout session can burn about two to three calories per minute, according to SheKnows. It's better than nothing, right? Plus, it's exercise you'll never complain about.

6. Making out keeps your heart in good shape.

Kissing doesn't just fill your heart up with joy and desire, Dr. Varnado states that a bit of kissing can keep your heart healthy. This is because smooching helps keep your blood pressure and cholesterol levels low. She cited a study with couples who were married or lived together showed more kissing increased relationship satisfaction, and reduced stress and cholesterol levels. 

7. Puckering up helps fight cavities.

A bit of tongue tangling is actually very good for your mouth. Not only does it boost your immunity, it also helps fight cavities, according to Demirjian. When you kiss, the amount of saliva your mouth produces increases, and saliva helps to fight cavity-causing plaque.
